Kids Coaching: A Healthy self-esteem is like an armor against the challenges of the world. Children who know their strengths and weaknesses and feel good about themselves seem to have a facility to manage conflicts and resisting negative pressures. They tend to smile more and enjoy life fully. These kids are realistic and generally optimistic. In contrast, children with low self-esteem can find challenges to be sources of major anxiety and frustration. Those who have low self esteem struggle to find solutions to problems. They often have self-critical thoughts like ”I’m not good” or ”I can’t do anything right”, they can also become passive, feel alone or depressed. Faced with a challenge, their immediate response might be; ”I can’t!” In this Kids Coaching, we give you some tips that can make a big difference in kids lives;

Be careful with your words.

Kids can be very sensitive to words. Remember to praise your child not only for a job well done, but also for the effort. But be honest. For example, if your child does not make the soccer team, avoid saying something like, “Well, next time you’ll work harder and you will make the team.” Instead, say, “Well, you did not make the team, but I’m really proud of you, you put a lot of effort”. Reward the effort instead of the result. Sometimes the skill level of a kid is simply not there – Helping your child to learn what he’s good at and what he’s not so good at can overcome the disappointments. Use love and humor to help your child to appreciate who he is and what makes him unique.

Be a positive role model.

If you are too harsh on yourself, pessimistic, or unrealistic about your abilities and limitations, your kid may possibly copy you. Feed your self esteem and you will be a perfect model for your child.

Identify the limiting beliefs of your kids.

It is important for parents to identify irrational and limiting beliefs of their kids, whether of perfection, beauty, ability, or anything else. Help your kids develop more positive and realistic beliefs will help them to have a healthier picture of themselves. Perceptions and negative self-beliefs can take root and become a reality for kids. For example, a child who has very good results at school but has difficulties with math may say, “I can’t do math. Create an environment of security and love.

Children who do not feel safe or are abused at home are more likely to develop poor self-esteem. Also watch for signs of abuse from others, problems in school, peer problems and other factors that can affect self-esteem in your child. Help your child become involved in constructive experiences.
